Our Winemaker

Vintages: 2017 – present

Riandri Visser : The Siren of SauvignonWineMag

Riandri Visser joined our team in 2014 as an assistant winemaker to Duncan Savage after graduating with a degree in B.Agric (Cellar Technology), Viticulture and Enology, followed by internships at Piekernierskloof and Tokara:

“Riandri Visser’s first standalone vintage is a cracker. The Cape Point Isliedh is a benchmark South African white and the 2017 is one of the finest to date. Buchu, spice, florals and good fruit concentration are underpinned by a fine acidity with a saline, lingering finish. A greater degree of Sémillon adds gravitas to the 2017; similar to the best ageing vintages of the past.” – WineCellar.co.za

“The combination of Riandri’s nurturing hand – she talks about the meditative properties of pruning, visiting the vines at least once a day to keep an eye- and the natural qualities of the terroir, guarantees something spectacular. From what we could gather, though Riandri is a winemaker who only happens to be a woman by her own admission, she does impart a great sense of care and precision in her winemaking, something very well suited to her chosen varietals.” –Port2Port

Winemaking has always been a dance between chemistry and alchemy, a fine balance of good, old-fashioned agriculture on the ground, and gut feel in the cellar. It’s an art that few really master in their lifetime.

Yet nestled atop the Noordhoek Valley, with sea spray close enough to smell and even taste when the wind blows right, surrounded by vines famed for their bounty, you’ll find a young, new winemaker with a fierce work ethic, an old soul and an artist’s flair for creating real beauty from each unlikely bunch. – Wade Bales
